you know, over the years my view on the way ace attorney presents its legal system has changed
because obviously, for the sake of writing a fun game, you need to play up the drama and the antics. but it felt ridiculous as a world
but i've softened on that a bit. because, while it is unrealistically ridiculous, it's at least ridiculous in a direction that i can understand. i think the implication is that the world of ace attorney is one where the predominat driving force behind the legal system isn't "justice", but it's not even any of the shitty things it is in real life either
the number 1 principle of the ace attorney legal system is "get that shit over with". trials start the day after the crime and are required to take no more than three days, because they need to get that shit over with. and from that, so much of we rightfully call silly kind of follows
like, yeah, the courts are heavily biased against the defense. a guilty verdict is clean, leaves no loose ends, closes the case. a not guilty verdict creates more work, there's still things to be done. they're incentivized to find a defendant guilty, and the only times any defense attorney manages to get that not guilty verdict, it's because they've already done a lot of the work; there has to be another trial but it'll be quick, nick already proved who the killer was
why bother charging anyone with perjury? there's more important stuff going on and we're just trying to churn through it. let the prosecutor whip whoever they want, we do not have the time to discipline them about it. the trial is mostly a formality anyway, we're not expecting the defense to pull out a miracle

it is silly, obviously, it's fun and played up for the game. but a lot of it tends to support that idea of the show just having to go on, just race through the trial, get it done and don't worry too much about it

i find it interesting that grossberg takes winston payne completely seriously. he's scared for mia
i genuinely think the payne's supposed reputations are real and earned. i think they're out there winning cases all the time. i think that basically nobody is doing it like our protagonists do it, and as much as the paynes are a joke out-of-universe, i believe they're crushing as many rookie attorneys as they say they are

oh yeah you can present profiles whenever you please in this game, can't you? that's cool, i miss that, i think in later games they went back to only allowing you to object with evidence and answer specific "who" questions with profiles

i've said it before but i'd LOVE a full game about mia. the two times we get to play as her are her first and second trials. i want to play as an experienced mia, who's learned the tricks of the trade. i want to play as the mia who taught nick. i want to see her courtroom tactics, staying a little cooler than nick does, a little less bluffing. i want to see her using what she's learned from the prosecutors, let you set traps for them to walk into

everything else notwithstanding, it is fucking weird that the prosecution gets to call the defendant, get them to testify, and then force their own attorney to tear them apart over it. like why can't i go "no objections your honor, this dude's rock solid". he's my guy. i like him

i'm sure that the prosecution has the ability to go "so, the defense has no objections, which is weird because i can prove that testimony is full of lies" so i have to actually play along, but like. why is it my job to make my guy look bad? why aren't you pointing out, as part of having the witness testify, the problems with what they're saying, and then letting me actually defend on cross? it's just weird
