modern display tech is actually completely fucking broken, you have shit like HDR, VRR, sky-high refresh rates, 8k and higher for some reason
and none of it actually ever works properly

and some of these are honestly just solutions in search of a problem

8k is completely pointless unless you have a projector with a gigantic screen
high refresh rates are only useful for competitive gaming and otherwise detrimental for everything else
vrr in turn is basically ineffective and incomplete on 60hz monitors

HDR is in the same category as stereoscopic 3D in that it's a neat gimmick that's fun for 5 minutes and then you forget it even exists
implementations are broken and unreliable, and HDR content actually fucks up image quality for anyone who doesn't have the hardware for it

and this reflects the state of basically everything else
wifi 5 came out in 2013, wifi 6 in 2021
and with definitely not enough time for it to mature, or even get in the hands of consumers, wifi 7 was introduced in 2024 (and the standard isn't even ratified yet)

@novenary my thoughts:
- 8k is definitely overkill, most people aren't going to notice a difference between 4k and 8k all else being equal
- high refresh rates and vrr I think are actually quite nice to have outside gaming, like for video it can help with not having to resort to tricks like 3:2 pull down for otherwise mismatched frame rates. The two do have to go hand and hand together though.
- HDR I feel does need more time to mature
- Definitely agree with the wifi thing

i have the suspicion that most people don't even notice the difference between hd and 4k, let alone 4k and 8k

@steffo @mikoto it can be noticeable on a huge TV, but yeah even I only download movies in 1080p because the difference isn't worth the extra bandwidth and storage (and also because it's increasingly hard to find 4k SDR encodes)
8k is waaaay past diminishing returns

yeah that's pretty much why i went with a new 1080p screen instead of going for a 2160p one
