@brennen I really want a sundial but it seems like it should be customized for your location and I don't know how to do that, or where to buy a nice customized one

@skyfaller @brennen iirc the horizontal ones are easier and only need to be customized for latitude (and then being placed quite flat and correctly aligned)
for the vertical ones one should also worry about the precise direction of the wall they are on, and the calculations become a bit more cumbersome, but I believe that these days you don't have to get a book and do them by hand¹, but there are convenient websites that will do them for you :)
the *really* cool thing are those *travel*, *pocket* sundials where you have an adjustable gnomon that you have to setup to the correct location. ages ago I saw one in the window of a shop in Briançon but couldn't afford it, and I'm quite sure that if I had gone back there on the next day the shop would no longer be there.
¹ back in my time I got to the “get a book” step, and then realized I was missing a good wall to do it on :D but I still would like to, one day (using a computer for the calculations, thanks :D )
