In Québec, a "mère poule"(mother chicken) is when someone is being overprotective. Overtime I've shortened the expression, distorted it to "murple" (that I've decided is pronounced murr-pole).
"We are such murples." I said to Devine come morning, when we were certain that the baby geese were fine.
