Perhaps it's just me, but I do find it amusing that the GNU Readline 8.3 announcement, in July 2025, gives two FTP URLs as the primary way to obtain the software.

@corbet my web host won't let me ssh in unless I pay lots more money, which is how I re-learned that both sides have to agree on BINARY mode and all clients default to ASCII

Ah, '80s FTP.
I recall a text adventure puzzle where an in-game terminal with an ftp client let you teleport objects. If left in ASCII mode, a transporter-accident "worthless pile of protoplasm" resulted.
