A strong Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) event over the arctic region is now starting and is forecast to create a rapid and full breakdown of the stratospheric Polar Vortex. This will bring cold surface arctic air into the central and eastern U.S. in the latter half of March.
Here are wind charts at 10 hPa (~30 km altitude) showing the splitting of the polar vortex now and into next week. The wind direction at that altitude will reverse as shown below.
