The fact that you can motor a boat to nearly all over France via canals and locks still blows me away.
It’s not exactly ‘getting away’, as a sailboat on open water might be thought of—more like trapped in the bowels of the land—but it’s remarkable nonetheless how far you can go.
Likewise the long history of making these canals is fascinating. A significant canal by us is the Rhône–Rhine Canal.
