13yo and I went out to do evening chores. She collects eggs while I get the barn set up for putting the goats in at night. When I came out to get the goats she yelled from the chicken coop "This isn't good!" and I could hear peeping.
It happens fairly often that a hen goes off and hides and sits on eggs, then appears 3 weeks later with a bunch of chicks you didn't ask for (often late in the season). But this time, there was a mama hen with 6 chicks, and peeping coming from the coop ceiling.

This ridiculous hen had climbed up into the straw-filled ceiling, laid a whole bunch of eggs, patiently sat on them for 3 weeks, all right above the door of the coop that I walk through at least twice a day. I had no idea.
The best part is that this mama and 6 of the chicks had to fall out of the 12 foot ceiling! I imagine it looked something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDJw43BJtCE

But we could hear multiple chicks peeping in the ceiling, so clearly not all of them were brave enough to jump. We got a ladder, and carefully handed down FOUR more chicks.
Then we captured the mama, and all the babies, and put them in a better spot. (Late October in Saskatchewan is a terrible time for baby chicks. But whatever, they're here and they're cute so... yeah.)

They're SO CUTE. Little puffballs!
And now they are in a nice warm room with a heat lamp. Yay I guess.
And I've been thinking about the mass-to-area ratio of falling space debris so much that now I can't stop thinking about a terminal velocity calculation for puffball chicks. (Luckily, it's a very low number.)

Who knew that CHICKS in the CEILING were just getting me ready for an incredibly weird day.
