It’s raining today (on and off) so I fired up the forge.

Initially I was going to make a belt buckle, but the material I had wasn’t behaving so I ditched that for now and started on this instead.

I’ve been playing a lot of KCDII lately and figured I might try either a Knight’s Axe or a polearm. Either way, I needed to make an eye, which is as far as I got today. The steel is a piece of truck leaf spring.

Back at it again this morning. Excess stock removed, and the basic shape forged in. Lots of cleanup left to do though.

          Ah, that blows!

The danger of re-using old steel, especially old vehicle springs, is that they have had a hard life and are apt to have developed flaws. Like this rather deep crack in the blade.

I did a bit of dodgy electric welding to hopefully seal up the cracks, and then gave it a quick grind.

I'm not convinced it would stand up to serious abuse, but it was never actually meant to be used anyway.

Much more grinding needed. That is unfortunately the least enjoyable part of the whole process. (could do with a more powerful grinder really, the 2x36 / 8 inch one I have is showing its limitations).

Coming along slowly. More grinding and some hand filling today.

On a temporary handle at the moment.
