I had the good fortune to be in Paris for the most recent IWP9 (https://iwp9.org/), which was hosted at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers. The adjacent technology museum (https://www.arts-et-metiers.net/) has been collecting since 1794. It's a trove of famout equipment - from 5 of Pascal's mechanical adding machines, to early lathes, automatic looms, printing equipment, up to even a Cray-2, it covers off just about all my "modern" tech itches.

Getting to really pore over Vaucanson's lathe (https://collections.arts-et-metiers.net/?queryId=265e613a-0ea8-4bad-9a05-71545df07c13) was a delight. The photos are terrible on account of the glass, but the adjustments are all easily understood. The carriage is fixed, but both centers can be adjusted to bring the work up to the cutting tool as square as need be.
The striking thing is how *big* this thing is. It's easily a 1.5m bed length. The frame elements are some 7-8cm (guessing, couldn't measure) in cross section.

Also there was this neat gear hobbing machine (https://collections.arts-et-metiers.net/?queryId=4aa24804-610a-42ca-be07-1020a2fef082), set up to cut inside teeth on a ring gear. In front of it are the parts needed to cut outside teeth.
