how much must one hate the english language to consider lines such as

Woe betide the man who stands opposed to the Weapon of Light, for death will be his reward. Death for him and his kin and all that he holds dear.
Woe betide the man who stands with the Weapon of Light, for death will be his reward. Death for him and his kin and all that he holds dear.

      as something bad?

@halva anti localization folks are fucking deranged and are the perfect example of why gamers/consumers should not be trusted to know what they really want

@novenary@akko.wtf anti-localization/literalism is really funny to me tbh

like, do you hate your language so much you want to contort it to fit another language? do you fetishize another culture so much that you'd rather have their cultural references (that you'll miss) than the equivalents in your culture?

@halva I can at least understand the latter if you're really into that culture, but that's a niche thing
for the former, why are you relying on translation? learn the original language at this point lmao

@novenary @halva Second point also may work if the original material it's really specific to that culture and nearly impossible to localize without doing Ace Attorney levels of mental gymnastics, but that's another extreme and a different way to do a bad job localizing.

I remember Touhou manga unofficial translations, and those needed a whole extra pages to explain references, or like that horror/humor manga about a snake god lady and two modern kids that bother her. Both relied heavily on understanding of japanese folklore, and giving additional notes about it is a nice compromise instead of just having more westernized words but leave relevant lore unexplained. (Though touhou translation community is also anti-localizing crowd example in it's own way, that cannot stand an official translation using the word "demon" to describe youkai or yomu books or whatever, despite it being easier to understand without losing that much context since their lore is explained either way...)

@halva @untsuki 4kids is a bit of an extreme example tbf, I haven't really checked but apparently they hardly translate and rather write a whole new script that somehow fits the images
I guess cardcaptors takes the cake for the worst anime "dub" ever produced though
