Frankly, I don't think these guys are that ignorant or stupid about SCIFs and secure phones.

Frankly, I don't think these guys are that ignorant or stupid about SCIFs and secure phones. They know the drill and they very likely bypass established protocols for reasons. They got caught due to sloppiness.

The know nothing president.
Trump asked one reporter to explain the leak to him.
"They were using Signal to coordinate on sensitive materials," the reporter said.
"What were they talking about?" Trump pressed. "You mean the attack on the Houthis?"
"Well, it couldn't have been very effective because the attack was very effective," he added dismissively. "I don't know anything about it. You're telling me about it for the first time."
What did you expect?

Elizabeth Warren makes a similar point:
"This is blatantly illegal and dangerous beyond belief.
Our national security is in the hands of complete amateurs.
What other highly sensitive national security conversations are happening over group chat? Any other random people accidentally added to those, too?"
These folks know that classified info can only be exchanged using govt approved devices and apps inside SCIFs. And yet ...

Josh Marshall at https://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/signalgate-is-bad-but-opsec-isnt-even-the-worst-part-of-it writes -
"Using a Signal app like this is hiding what’s happening from the govt itself. And that is almost certainly not an unintended byproduct but the very reason for the use. These are disappearing comms. There won’t be any records to determine whether crimes were committed.
This is clearly routine in the Trump administration. It’s the obvious place for bribes, various kinds of criminal conduct, asking foreign governments to do dirty jobs."

NPR reports that a Pentagon-wide advisory went out just a week ago warning against using the messaging app Signal, even for unclassified information, due to infiltration by Russian hacking groups.
The Pentagon memo includes a reminder that 3rd party messaging apps (e.g. Signal) are not approved to process or store non-public unclassified information (e.g, Protected, FOUO, CUI, etc)." And certainly not approved for classified info.
So, the question for the WH - Why?
