Done with the work thing, time for a couple days driving around France. First up, one of the last of the real world clacks. (Chappe telegraph.) Sadly, we couldn't get here in time to see it in operation, and it doesn't open until 13:00 tomorrow.

Years ago I helped a friend to prepare his PhD dissertation about communication, and I discovered that in 1838 the Chappe sent news from Paris to Toulouse (588 km) in 2,5 hours¹.
The "language" had 98 symbols, 6 control codes and 92 "chars": combining them it was possible to have 8464 combinations².
