      @BoydStephenSmithJr @pluralistic @codinghorror @pluralistic.net I subscribe to some arxiv summarizing bots, which have taken the annoyance I used to have of long threads. I don't know if I had to do something, but each post is hidden for me behind a content warning, so I only have to parse it if I decide I have the energy.

        @jayalane @BoydStephenSmithJr @codinghorror @pluralistic.net if you click on any post in the thread, and then on the little eye icon, it should put all the posts in order and also unroll them

            @pluralistic @codinghorror this is indeed a hilariously valid response. But also, I have come to really appreciate the CW labels you've added for your long threads. ❤️

              wjmaggos@liberal.city yes that's exactly what I was alluding to. A bunch of talented developers (and me too, tangentially) have been working directly with Evan P. and the Mastodon team to improve handling of long form text.

              Mamot.fr does not support that kind of article composition yet, but if they're reasonably up to date they will support other softwares publishing them.

              It will even hide long form content behind an expando button, so I think it checks off all of pluralistic@mamot.fr's boxes. That said, if he's happy with the flow who am I to tell him to change?

                  Thanks for (re-)sharing the explanation on why you're on that particular server; I wondered about that.

                  Though I primarily read your blog posts on @medium, I'm glad to follow you on Mastodon because unlike many popular writers, you frequently engage with people in your comments and share posts by others, even randos like myself.

                          @pluralistic @codinghorror I honestly don't get their problem.

                          And I say this as someone who basically ignores your threads. I just use them to find the start and the direct link to the blog post, where I read your stuff if and when I've got the time.

                          It's not as if scrolling up or down for a while was such a huge load of work. Some finger swapping or mouse wheel action and it's done... 🤷‍♂️

I've got a filter in place to filter out your long threads, but am able to see the comments folks post here in response to your posts. Seeing the replies others post often piques my interest enough to open up my RSS feedreader and read your blog post in its entirety.

                            Thanks for your generosity in sharing your insights so freely in this way.

                              Because people who follow that hashtag are going to see every post in the long thread, instead of just the first (or last) one (which they can click on to see it all if desired).

                              "people can mute hashtags" - news to me. You would only need to do that for an account you follow, and if an account you follow is posting lots of long threads then you would just unfollow them to begin with (as a couple of us here have already said we did), and follow the hashtags you do want to see. 🙂

                                @SmartmanApps i believe some use hashtags as a way to filter out material from their local timeline (that is, from people they don't necessarily follow), sort of along the lines of content warnings.

I almost *never* read blogs anymore but I love coming across one of your threads and then choosing to read it or skip it. Actually, I dont think I've ever gone to the long-form link you provide, and just stick to my phones mastodon client.

                                  And... "considered blogging?" Is he that clueless?

                                      @juliesbits @codinghorror for iOS users, Tapestry by @Iconfactory is great for reading @pluralistic. I have the RSS of the blog in my timeline that only shows up once, and then I have this filter that works beautifully for filtering out the long threads. This way I get the full blog text, truncated in the timeline, but easy to click on and read, and also all of the comments and re-posts from Cory. The best of both worlds.

                                        @pluralistic I liked some of the suggestions to make the first post in the thread regular public and the rest of the thread “public quiet”, as well as mastodon clients that will collapse long threads automatically (or to your preference). I apologize for initiating the conversation in this semi-provocative way, but I assure you my goal, as always, is to improve the fediverse experience / open source software for everyone. I’m here to help, have fun, and find allies.

                                          @codinghorror What's "public quiet?"

                                          I only know "unlisted" which does nothing to decrease the likelihood that the subsequent posts will appear in TLs but DOES make those posts unsearchable, which sucks - it's all downside, no benefit... to anyone.
