I mean The Cure is my favorite band but I will listen to anything good.

Which brings us to the Queen of Mom Songs. I know the lyrics to almost every Pat Benitar song because my mom sang them all when I was growing up; it wasn't until I hit about 17 or 18 that I realized it's because she should have gotten a divorce decades ago.

Look where else on the internet are you going to hear obscure Shoegaze Tracks from the 90's and also Pat Benatar? Right.

Imagine my surprise and chagrin when, sometime around 1995ish, I came flying out of the record shop with a rare, still wrapped EP featuring this song and ran home to blast it on my stereo sound system with vintage 1978 turntable - only for Mom to come upstairs holding her copy of the original album.

Another example of my music tastes colliding violently with Mom Songs - when I first started playing this around the house, 20 years after it came out, my Mom came running into the room to tell me that she loved it.

I said "as if; you don't even know what OMD means..."

Without missing a beat she said "it means Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark you little shit."

            Advantage Mom.

I've definitely shared this song in a different context than "Mom Songs" - but also? This might be the absolute peak of 80's pop and also Mom Songs. Absolutely love the synth triangle btw...

The "Mom Song" Band I'm most embarrassed about liking tracks from is definitely Fleetwood Mac. And I mean mid to late 80's "we're not doing Stadium Rock anymore" era Fleetwood Mac.

This for example, is fucking delightful.

I mean, yes it's dawning on me that my Mom might have been secretly cooler than other Moms and I just didn't notice because the figure of menace in our lives that was my father just sucked all the oxygen out of everything...

First time I ever heard this was NOT on college radio. It was in my mom's record collection.

She also introduced me to the Pretenders and bought me a single cassette of this song. Took like a decade to pay off, but I was the coolest kid in school when I started jamming this on my Walkman loud enough for everyone around me to hear later in life.

Similar story here. One day I come home from school and my mom is doing the entire Flashdance audition routine to this song... turns out Mom had excellent taste in music; at time time, neither of us knew this band hung out with the Cure on tour habitually because nobody else could drink with either band.

This is a Mom Song I lost a thirty year argument over - I used to HATE the Bangles growing up and Mom insisted they were amazing. Then one day in my mid thirties this song comes on the radio and I'm like, involuntarily bopping to it while working - Mom was, once again, right all along.
