In Hamburg, we currently have a "Volksbegehren" (petition for a referendum) for less annoying advertisements in the city, @hhwerbefrei
The proposal is to ban all ads that are larger than DIN A0, backlit, moving, or too many in one place!
We need 80000 signatures to have a citywide referendum. If you live in Hamburg and are older than 16, please support this!

I went out to collect signatures for @hhwerbefrei for the first time today, and it was really fun!
Some people practically ran into my arms: "I've been wanting to sign this, I already wondered where to find you!!"
For another person, the campaign was new, but they said" "This is the best thing I've ever signed for on the street!" :3
Two people walked past me as I explained what I was doing, but then changed their minds and came back! :D

Someone said: "I wished we had something like this in Berlin…" So I got to tell them about https://berlin-werbefrei.de! \o/
A person younger than 16 wanted to sign, as well. I let them – it's a "solidary signature" and shows support! It will be sorted out later. That's the reason why we're collecting 80k signatures, instead of the required minimum of ~64k (5% of all Hamburger citizens who may vote).
The people who were by far most likely to sign were groups of friends between 20-30, I think!

There is a lady from Hamburg living here in Liguria: I'll tell her to check if she can sign!

Of course, not everyone was eager to support the petition:
A couple of people told me that they work in advertising, and it would go against their interests.
One person said: "You keep collecting signatures, but I like ads!" (Weird…)
And most people just ignored me or waved dismissively. I think they assumed that I wanted to sell them something, or didn't want to be bothered. Which is completely understandable!
But man, petitions for referendums are such an awesome democratic tool!

@blinry Thank you for working in my interest.

In 2011 I was collecting signatures for a referendum on profit on water services¹.
Since a lot of people reply "I'm not interested", I added to the leaflet a cartoon with a classy lady saying "Water? I'm not interested!" and a guy replying: "Do you mean… you don't wash yourself???"
I know, sometimes I'm a bit bastard…
