This morning, I asked the crew working on our roof if they'd prefer to postpone the work due to the heat. I'm not in a hurry, and their well-being is far more important to me than any postponable repairs. They told me it's going to be like this (or worse) until September, but at least on our roof, they catch a bit more breeze since it's higher than others.
Hats off to them, but I still feel disheartened. -

My article yesterday sparked a lot of comments on many of the platforms where I published it.
My article yesterday sparked a lot of comments on many of the platforms where I published it. Some comments, unfortunately, only served to confirm what I wrote in the article, reasonably from people who hadn't read it. "Open Source software users are in fact consumers, so they have the right to demand" or "Open Source is now in the hands of corporations, so it's fine to be demanding" were the most common comments.
Another common type of comment: "Developers who release open source must take responsibility for satisfying users, otherwise they'd better not release". Or "all Open Source projects and their communities are political".
All of this only confirms what I wrote in the article.
The comment that made me smile? The one in the screenshot. -
From Collaborators to Consumers: Have We Killed the Soul of Open Source?
From Collaborators to Consumers: Have We Killed the Soul of Open Source?
The Open Source community is becoming increasingly polarized. From the "distro wars" to Wayland vs. X11, the spirit of collaboration is fading. Are we shifting from "collaborators" to "consumers", and what can we do to build bridges instead of walls?

Canadian friends on the #Fediverse
Canadian friends on the #Fediverse
With the weather shifting so much these days, it might be useful to get your local forecast right in your timeline!#FediMeteo (https://fedimeteo.com) is a project that processes data from #OpenMeteo and publishes it—country by country, city by city—on the Fediverse, on each city’s web page, and also via RSS.
Every 6 hours, a friendly bot updates and shares the latest weather data.
How does it work?
Follow your city's page on the Fediverse.
If you don’t see forecasts yet, it likely means no one’s following that city.
Start following it, and you'll receive the updates in the next cycle!
Here's the link for Canada and the list of cities currently available.
Decentralised, open-source weather forecasts on the Fediverse!

Ever heard of vibe coding?
Ever heard of vibe coding?
It’s when the code looks fine, tests pass, vibes are good - so it goes to production. Even if it’s wide open to SQL injection.I’ve seen it happen.
AI wrote it. Devs trusted it. Management loved it.
Nobody understood it.We’re trading skill for speed.
And that’s how we lose our freedom.Vibe Coding Will Rob Us of Our Freedom: https://it-notes.dragas.net/2025/06/05/vibe-coding-will-rob-us-of-our-freedom/

I've been noticing a worrying trend: developers being pushed to value speed over understanding, relying on AI to just "get it done".
I've been noticing a worrying trend: developers being pushed to value speed over understanding, relying on AI to just "get it done". But what happens when we no longer know what our code is really doing?
My take on this will be on my-notes tomorrow morning.

The delivery of the Dell server with FreeBSD was scheduled for this morning, but I see from the traffic website that there's been an accident causing over an hour of delays. I've agreed with the client to reschedule the delivery for the afternoon, hoping the situation will improve. Unfortunately, setbacks like this are a daily occurrence.

Me: Oh no! The correct source was source/ - not source/dir - and now all of destdir's contents (4.6 TB) have been deleted!
Me, two seconds later: Oh well. `zfs rollback datapool/dataset@lastSnap`rsync -avhHPx --delete source/ destdir/
Thank you, ZFS.

I've used Wasabi Cloud for years for some external backups.
I've used Wasabi Cloud for years for some external backups. Just a few things, and at times I went down to zero because I had no data. No billing. Recently, I emptied everything again and waited the required days so the data would no longer be counted. I haven’t had anything there for months, yet I just received another $6.99 bill.
I contacted them and asked why, since I’ve had zero data for months.
The official response: even if you have zero data, you still pay the minimum charge because it’s like a pay-as-you-go plan - you pay even if you don’t make any calls.Tomorrow morning I’m deleting the account. This doesn’t seem like a fair business practice.
Let’s go back to using our own drives, for crying out loud! Own Your Data! -
