@bkuhn imo yes, folks should boycott conferences in places where trans folks wouldn’t feel safe traveling to, regardless of the fact that some trans folks already live there.

With a conference hosted in an unsafe area, you’re asking folks who live in a safe area to travel somewhere they would be unsafe.

@danirabbit @bkuhn @Myotis_cuniculus @allthingsopen @ErinInTheMorn @federicomena ah, but you see danielle, you foolish trans person you, that would require allies to actually do something else than tweeting about how they support trans people, you see. such monumental efforts are beyond the reach of the common ally. you're asking for a lot here.

@purplerabbit Most #FOSS events have done a terrible job in this regard: they often denounce the regime's policies where they host the event but then still have the event there.
The difficulty in navigating the USA in the middle of this Civil Cold War is ∄ uniformity…∴ @ErinInTheMorn's map is so useful.
I agree allies should also avoid regimes where the risk level is too high for trans ppl. That's why I'm asking if Erin might include that in analysis in future.

@bkuhn @danirabbit @ErinInTheMorn @Myotis_cuniculus @purplerabbit OTOH, events in places that are pretty bad for LGBTQIA+ rights (and often human rights in general) are often pretty important to help the geographical diversity of the FOSS community, where people from outside the usual rich countries are pretty bad represented. -
@danirabbit @ErinInTheMorn @Myotis_cuniculus @bkuhn @purplerabbit (that “often” is there to exclude, among other places, the current USA, whose developers are still pretty represented in FOSS) -
Relatedly, we debated this internally about #FOSSY 2025 at #SFC because coming to the USA is a difficult issue rn.
We concluded to go ahead w/ the conference & note that it was really for folks already in the USA (since entering the USA is dangerous for many folks), & announce it would move to Vancouver, BC, .CA for 2026.

(It helped that #FOSSY was in Oregon which is a safer state per:
https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/anti-trans-national-legal-risk-assessment so it was safe for those already *in* the USA). -
@bkuhn yeah, and moving a conference to a different country on short term is very much not trivial, in many cases moving the next edition is a more sensible choice.
and short term here may even be one or two years, depending on the type of venue.
