One of the things I love about fedi is the lack of central algorithm. I know some instance software has "trending" and other tabs but those are only local to the instance. I was a bit hesitant at first to join fedi because I knew everything was chronological. It gets frustrating occasionally with my friends who are in different timezones but overall… my interactions feel a lot more natural. I find posts because my friends share them, not because some algorithm picks up on it.

Would you find it to be an affront if my software were to artificially promote "stuff you may have missed" purely out of concern for missing posts due to time zone?

@julian@community.nodebb.org I think it’d be cool to have a "replay" of what you might have missed. Sort of like an IRC bouncer when you connect to it replaying x lines of chat.

@julian@community.nodebb.org True. There’s also a distinction in what "algorithm" means in this aspect. I find that when people refer to social media "algorithms" they’re referring to places like YouTube where the "algorithm" has machine learning. There’s a difference between that sort of thing and a simple algorithm (as in the proper term) that collects posts since you last logged off, sorts them by which ones were most active when you log back in and plays those back.

@puppygirlhornypost2 @julian I often think about implementing some kind of algorithm not to miss stuff, but the key is that I want to be in control of how it works. Generic algorithms are terrible.
For instance, I might want to see the most popular post from each one of my follows over the last 24h. That way, I get to see at least one post from *everyone*. That lets me manually check out people I want, and prevents me from forgetting someone exists just because our timezones don't sync.

Real question is where do you draw the line between an algo for utility and whatever is beyond that?
