I didn't really understand what was going on in the cutscene where Flowery is chasing down the Knight and says "Do you think you're the only one who can start a battle?" until I went back and watched it slowed down
The Knight is trying to get away from Flowery, so he can't touch them. Instead, he gets a Floradinn to show up, touches them to start a battle the same way you do, then immediately spares the Floradinn, leaving him and the Knight in the battle UI together

it's not ignoring the damage, it cut the tail of the 9s so they turned into 0s
