The book contract I signed a few days ago has a "no genAI" clause. Neither I, the author, nor the editor/publisher are allowed to use genAI. I am extremely happy about having that written officially in the document!

@sundogplanets I agree with you and dislike #AI immensely but I ask the question 'is autocorrect AI, is spellcheck AI, is formatting AI?' We all accept and use AI to polish our work. What we find unacceptable is using AI to create and/or replace the creative process. Do you agree?

Well, not all of us. I’m a published author and I don’t use any kind of automated spellchecking or format editing. None of the automated grammar checking programs even work well enough. Spell checking has utility, but isn’t necessary.

I wish people would stop trying to use this as a “gotcha,” plenty of authors don’t use these tools. I don’t use autocorrect/auto-capitalization on my phone, either. Simply not accurate enough.

@sidereal @sundogplanets not trying to use my comment as a "gotcha". I was genuinely curious to see at what level most of us see AI as a "good thing" and where the cut-off point lies. I'm a published author and I use autocorrect, spellcheck and formatting to make my work look polished and professional. My red line is using AI to write for me, to replace what I write or create under my name.

@Strider_UK @sidereal There's a big difference between spellcheck and LLMs that are built on stolen IP. You know that.

@sundogplanets @sidereal @Strider_UK I'm afraid that the difference between the two is getting blurred?

e.g. stuff like grammarly: I suppose it does use some kind of LLM, and it has a number of the issues with LLM generated text (e.g. flattening of style) so I wouldn't trust it not to also suffer from the ethical issues with LLMs, but afaik it's being sold as basically an advanced spellcheck.

(I don't have direct experience, I'm still using 20th century-style :) aspell under linux, which is quite limited, but also I'm not writing professionally, so I don't care that much)
