Aha, didn't know that word in French. (Which isn't a huge surprise given my meagre vocab).
"Scaphandre" meaning a sealed suit like a diving suit, or space suit and "scaphandre de vol" for a flight suit.

@GustavinoBevilacqua nice - the flowers or the greens?
No sign of ours yet but just a couple of weeks away probably.

I had a nasty face-plant into a wall last week, and spent much of the last 10days with a cervical collar, healing a neck sprain, and some face damage.
Thankfully I'm mostly healed, other than a sore knee that has been cutting into my afternoon-walk opportunities.
Ready for spring activities once I'm done with this.
Good reminder not to take one's #health for granted - it can change pretty suddenly.

RE: We have a well-worn saying we haul out at #restaurants in a certain situation, and it's invariably proved right.postato in Uncategorized
Amazing how often it's true. You spend the whole time hoping there will be a bit of time without them, but nope.
It always pays to swap tables right away if you notice. It never turns out to be less annoying than you initially think.
Sometimes it's just easier to go to a different restaurant if the seating options are limited. A little inconvenience, but if you have a more enjoyable meal, it's worth it.

We have a well-worn saying we haul out at #restaurants in a certain situation, and it's invariably proved right.
You arrive and notice that you are near an annoying group (ie one loud-talker who dominates their table, talking over everyone else). They've often finished their meal, even paid their bill and we look at each other and say "they're still going to be here when we leave, aren't they."

RE: A little time on my $15 thrift shop guitar repairs today.postato in Uncategorized
Incidentally, I stumbled across an identical guitar to mine for sale online ( 2yr old posting).
It appears to be in very bad shape, see pic below, worse perhaps than my $15 thrift-shop one, and yet the seller asked $1100 for it.
Looks like a major split badly repaired (I had one of those too) plus a terrible coat of varnish globbed onto it.
Happy to have low bar to define success for me on my project.

A little time on my $15 thrift shop guitar repairs today. I've been experimenting with finish repairs for the top dents, gouges and splits, and seem to have something that works pretty well… after lots of tests.
It's time intensive, with lots of steps, and building of layers, but it seems to preserve the wood tone and I'm hopeful the damaged areas will be subdued quite well.

Haven't searched on the topic for a while, but I recall that I was previously unable to find an account of anyone else ever seeing a lunar impact in real time. There are before/after pics of impact areas of course.
I often wonder which craters are 'my' craters. It would prob be hard to figure out now, but would be fun to some day look through archival photos from that period and see if I could determine where and when the impact happened.

I ran in to tell someone, siblings or my mom, I don't recall. The reaction was disinterest, as if I'd said the most boring thing, like 'a bird flew past the house.' No interest, no reaction.
Seeing it, I recall being struck by the silence. It felt like something so dramatic should've made a noise, as absurd as I knew that to be. Funny that that was my first thought.
So I'd seen a thing so dramatic, yet there was nothing I could do with it. Nobody to tell, no Internet, no video!

I was practicing tracking the moon, with the two axis adjuster knobs on the cheapo azimuthal mount, i was keeping the lower central area of the moon in my view.
It was very clear, bright and sharp, with lots of cool craters and shadows to see.
Suddenly, like a rock skipping across a lake, I saw a mark appear, headed "northward" across the face of the moon!
I gasped in shock, not sure what I'd seen.

I'm trying to work out when it happened.
Best guess is that it was August or September of either 1977, 78 or 79. Because I was outside with my recently acquired telescope, in the darkness, but it wasn't cold.
In the north where I lived as a kid, summers are bright until nearly 11pm, and I don't think it was that late. So late summer is likely.
I was looking at the moon with my 3 inch refractor, a smallish lens, and a 90° prism, with the moon high up, maybe 50° above the horizon.

This reminds me of a dramatic astronomical thing I once saw live as it happened.
I'd even go so far as to say I could be one of the only humans to have ever witnessed such an event in real time!
Mini thread!

Wasn't expecting snow this morning, but it's thankfully light. It's also 'garbage' day – but not actual garbage, just green bin (organics) and paper.
We don't really have much of either accumulated so I just cleared the path a bit and skipped putting out the bins until next week so the truck/workers need not stop here for tiny amounts.
